Tips For Dealers
Book your table(s) early. If you wait until the last minute, sometimes the tables will sell out at a popular show and you may end up on a waiting list. If you’re set up at a show and think you’d like to come back next time, try to book your table before you leave. Popular shows often give preference to past dealers and the best shows can sell out quickly.
Bring an assistant if possible, someone who can help you tend the table when buyers are in a frenzy or who can spell you for those trips to the restroom or snack bar. A trusted assistant can help you stay sane during a busy show.
Consider asking a buddy to go along–he gets into the show for free in exchange for helping you out. Or you could share a table with a fellow collector or enthusiast. You both display your items for sale, spell each other, and split the show table fees. You can also recruit family members (providing they are willing, not drafted into table duty).
If you don’t have an assistant, pack some snacks and drinks to keep with you at the table.
Get there early to set up. Be completely set up before the show opens to the public. If you are still unpacking when the public starts coming through, you will be distracted, and they will pass you by for other tables that already have their items on display. You may lose valuable business this way.
Be prepared. Many show halls are fairly dark. If the show permits it, bring a light for the table, plus an extension cord. Tablecloths make your table look good, they protect items that are on the table and can help cover merchandise and boxes stored under the table (if the tablecloth drapes over the front of your table). Use bedsheets, or large tablecloths, making sure to use the same color for each table you have. Consider bringing plastic shipping bags for customers who purchase from you.
Stay set up until the show closes. Even if the show has been slow for you, resist the urge to pack up early. There are times when a few customers come running in at the last minute, and they’re ready to buy. If you are one of the only dealers still set up, you are more likely to make a sale. It’s one of the best ways to get last-minute business.
Staying to the end will also make the show organizer happy. Show organizers hate to see dealers bugging out at 1:00 pm, when the show officially closes at 5:00 pm. It’s not fair to them and it’s not fair to the people who have paid their admission fee, only to walk in on a bunch of empty tables.
